Mud Season Request
During spring thaw conditions trailhead access to Hollow Fields, Alford Springs, Constitution Hill, and Steepletop can be troublesome. If you encounter poor road conditions (i.e. deep mud, ruts, erosion) approaching these reserves, please consider turning around. We encourage you to visit other BNRC trails in the meantime. Find a list of those here.
Please respect any “Road Closed” signs, and do not park on the side of the road or anywhere other than the BNRC trailheads for any reason. We ask this out of courtesy for our neighbors who need these roads to access their homes.
Thank you!

From the viewing platform at Basin Pond, you will find furry staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina). It grows quickly, and thrives in recently disturbed areas. Its red winter berries are especially beautiful when held in the beaks of chickadees, titmice, and other birds that need this source of scarce winter food to survive.
