Family Hiking Series with BNRC, GBLC, and CHP

This May-August hiking series is sponsored by the Berkshire Natural Resources Council, Great Barrington Land Conservancy, and Community Health Programs. The focus of each walk will be nature exploration, discovery, and the health benefits of spending time in nature.

Family Spring Walk at Lake Mansfield
Sunday, May 5th 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Description: Join us for a hike in the Lake Mansfield Conservation Forest where the trees are tall and there’s a boulder you can climb! We’ll explore the newly improved trail system and look signs of spring! Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: We’ll meet at the trailhead across from the town beach. (Lake Mansfield Rd, Great Barrington, MA 01230)


Community Health Programs Nature Exploration Hike
Tuesday, May 21st 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Description: Join us for a guided 1.5-mile hike on the CHP Trail. Our hike is a perfect way to enjoy nature discovery. We’ll explore the beaver ponds, open fields, and forests on this beautiful trail! Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: We’ll meet at the trailhead kiosk on the north side of the Community Health Programs parking lot. (444 Stockbridge Rd, Great Barrington, MA 01230)


Father’s Day Pfeiffer Arboretum Family Scavenger Hunt

Sunday, June 16th 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Description: Bring Dad and join us for a scavenger hunt along the trail! We’ll explore trees and other living things that thrive in the woodland and wetland ecosystems at the Pfeiffer Arboretum. We’ll scamper over lots of bog-bridges and enjoy a view of Long Pond. Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: The trailhead is located at 249 Long Pond Road, Great Barrington, MA 01230.


Housatonic Flats Nature Exploration Hike
Tuesday, June 25th 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Description: Hike the 0.9 mile Housatonic Flats. This property provides important habitat to many Berkshire mammals and birds.  We will bring binoculars and guide visitors on where to look and what to look for. Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: From Great Barrington: From the Price Chopper, head north on Route 7 for less than half a mile. Parking will be on the left.


Thomas & Palmer Brook Family Scavenger Hunt Hike

Description: Join us for a scavenger hunt hike! We’ll bring hand lenses and a field microscope to take a look at the little things. Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: Thomas and Palmer Brook is on State Road (Route 23) east of Great Barrington.  Look for a sign between 301 and 309 State Road, Great Barrington, MA 01230.


Fountain Pond/Threemile Hill Woodland Family Walk
Tuesday, July 23rd 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Description: Join us in exploring the beautiful forest! We’ll experiment with leaf and bark rubbings during our walk and learn how to identify what we see! Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: We will meet at the northern trailhead. Take Route 7 north through the commercial district of Great Barrington. From the traffic light at the McDonalds/Price Chopper shopping center, the trailhead is 1.0-mile north, on the right.


Alford Springs Family Nature Exploration Hike

Tuesday, August 6th 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Description: Wind through mountain laurel, white pine and oak forest on this 2.4-mile hike on the Mother Loop at Alford Springs Reserve. We’ll bring binoculars, magnifying glasses, and materials for leaf and bark rubbings! Please bring water and snack and wear sturdy footwear.

Directions: From Great Barrington: Take Taconic Avenue, which becomes Alford Road. Drive past Simon’s Rock to a left on Seekonk Road; follow Seekonk Road (becomes Green River Road) for 3.6 miles. Turn right on to Mountain Road (if you come to the New York State line, you’ve gone too far). Follow Mountain Road for 0.8 miles, bearing left at the first “Y” and left again at the sharp right turn at 0.8 miles. Alternatively continue right to reach a second, three-season parking lot further down the street.
