Difficulty: Easy to moderate (easy pace, little elevation changes)

Description: Hike the 4.5 miles of trail at Steepletop, Berkshire Natural Resource Council’s largest reserve. With more than 1,200 acres, miles of wood road, and expanses of wetland, mature forest, and young forest, there’s a lot to explore. We’ll search for spring happenings like spring ephemeral wildflowers and birds arriving. Bring your thinking caps and we’ll bring the field guides! Please wear sturdy footwear, bring water and a snack or lunch.

From Lee: From the Mass Pike/Big Y intersections, take Tyringham Road (opposite Big Y). After 6 miles turn right on Monterey Road and follow that into the Monterey town center. From the town center, turn left onto Route 23, and then take the first right onto New Marlborough Road. Right after crossing the wooden bridge, turn left to stay on New Marlborough Road. In just under a mile turn right to stay on New Marlborough Road. Drive a mile and a half then pull off to the left in a driveway near 648 New Marlborough-Monterey Road. BNRC maintains its own parking lot along the driveway.

From Great Barrington, take Route 23 east to Monterey. Just after the Monterey line, bear right onto Route 57/183 into New Marlborough. Just before the Old Inn on the Green in New Marlborough, turn left onto North Road; follow for 1.6 miles. Turn right at the steep, inclining driveway marked “684”. Bear right into our gravel parking lot at the top of the little hill. The trails begin right at the trailhead parking; there is a kiosk just beyond the gate.
