Explore one of the most dramatic ravines in the Berkshires and learn about the Library in the Wilderness Program.
Friday, August 17, 10:00 am – 11:30 am
Description: We’ll cross bridges over Lenox Mountain Brook, winding our way down to the dramatic ravine and learning about a new initiative of BNRC and the Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library. The Library in the Wilderness Program allows library cardholders to check out backpacks equipped with field guides, BNRC trail guides, a basic first aid kit, a compass, a magnifying glass, bug spray, and two ponchos just as they would a library book. The backpacks will be available for a 1-week checkout and reservations are required. We’ll have the backpacks on site and participants can experiment with all of the fun contents! Please bring lunch/snack, water, and appropriate footwear for this 1.2-mile hike.
Directions: Carpooling is always encouraged!
From Lenox: Take Route 183 South, passing Tanglewood. When the 183 bears left, take a right onto Lenox-Richmond Road. Drive up the hill 1.6 miles and turn left onto Lenox Branch Road or also called Lenox-West Stockbridge Road. Go .06 miles and the lot will be on the right at the sign. Overflow parking is further down.
From Great Barrington: Take Route 41 north into West Stockbridge. Turn right onto Swamp Road, then immediately right again onto Lenox Road. The parking will be on the left side of the road about 1.5 miles up the hill. Overflow parking is further down the hill.
From Pittsfield: Take West Housatonic Street west, then turn right onto Barker Road (shortly after Clapp Park) which becomes Swamp Road. After 3.5 miles turn left onto Lenox Road. After a mile, just passed the top of the hill, turn right to stay on Lenox Road. Parking will be at the left side of the road. Overflow parking is further down the road.
