Painting in Place is an art-making exchange with ecology. Through exercises in active listening, participants will generate ambient marks that represent continuity with their surroundings. We will train our senses to pay attention to subtle cues in texture, sound, and motion, drawing forth with our hands what we perceive when we attune to a variegated reality.
Work produced during the session will be collected as part of the closing reception of SANCTUARIES — and afterward, returned to you.
All materials provided. Free to attend. Registration required.
NOTE TO PARTICIPANTS:
Please bring your own chair. These sessions are rain or shine, however, if conditions are dangerous we will postpone to the next day, at the same time. We consider the elements as part of our art-making process! Dress appropriately, and know there will be some walking to arrive at each site. Once there, you will be provided with large clipboards, art materials, and trays. You may bring a bagged lunch.
Location: Thomas & Palmer Brook, Great Barrington
*SPACE IS LIMITED TO SIX PARTICIPANTS PER LOCATION.*
SANCTUARIES is a series of immersive, site-specific outdoor art installations by Camille Roos, created in partnership with Berkshire Natural Resource Council. Constructed from locally gathered and found materials, the installations explore the relationship between humans and the living landscape while drawing attention to the importance of protected habitats as places of refuge and regeneration.
Through art, SANCTUARIES invites reflection on our shared sentience and our shared responsibility to care for the places that care for us. Located at Thomas-Palmer Brook (July), Housatonic Flats (August), and Parson’s Marsh (September), each installation will be developed in consultation with BNRC’s land stewardship team to ensure minimal environmental impact and respect for ecosystems.
Camille Roos will offer three Painting in Place sessions at each installation site (materials provided), inviting community members to participate in creative reflection and interspecies communication together. These sessions provide opportunities for visitors of all ages and experience levels to engage directly with the sites through art-making. See the Registration Page for more information.
Installations are on view throughout the 2026 season, culminating in a public artist talk and closing exhibit of the emergent collaborations between art, community, and habitat.
