BNRC Ensures Permanent Protection of Cadwell’s Woods with City of Pittsfield Partnership
LENOX, MA--The City of Pittsfield has permanently protected Cadwell’s Woods Conservation Area, a 52.92-acre property off Barker Road, through a conservation restriction now held by Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC).
This agreement ensures that the land will remain forever conserved for open space, wildlife habitat, and passive recreation, strengthening Pittsfield’s commitment to protecting natural resources for future generations.
Cadwell’s Woods, formerly known as the Saw Mill property, features nearly 1.5 miles of wooded trails just minutes from downtown Pittsfield. Visitors can expect scenic walks along the Housatonic River and opportunities for birdwatching and snowshoeing on easy, flat terrain. The property’s ecological values include floodplain protection, prime forest soils, wetlands, and habitat for rare species, contributing to regional biodiversity and water quality.
“The permanent protection of Cadwell’s Woods is a major step forward in the City’s commitment to conservation and public access to nature,” said Pittsfield Mayor Peter Marchetti. “This land provides a space for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors while safeguarding critical environmental resources in the heart of our community.”
The property was acquired by the City in 2022 with Community Preservation Act funding and a Massachusetts state LAND (Local Acquisitions for Natural Diversity) grant. By holding the conservation restriction, BNRC ensures that Pittsfield newest park will remain protected in perpetuity, preventing development and guaranteeing its use for public enjoyment.
“Projects like this show what’s possible when municipalities and conservation organizations work together,” said Jenny Hansell, President of BNRC. “We’re honored to partner with the City to ensure Cadwell’s Woods remains a place for recreation and education, especially for city residents, and a safe home for wildlife.”
BNRC’s commitment to supporting green space in Pittsfield dates to 1967, when BNRC founder George Wislocki’s first conservation project was the former Brattle Brook farm, now a beloved Pittsfield park.
Jim McGrath, Pittsfield’s Park, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager, emphasized Cadwell’s community value: “Cadwell’s Woods links residents to nature close to home. With its gentle terrain and proximity to other open spaces, it’s an ideal destination for families, hikers, and those seeking time outdoors.”
Cadwell’s Woods joins other conserved areas in Pittsfield, including Barker Road Conservation Area and Wild Acres, creating important urban green spaces that support health and wellbeing for both people and wildlife. This protection also advances Pittsfield’s Open Space and Recreation Plan, which calls for creating a greenway along the West Branch of the Housatonic River and protecting lands that link Wahconah Park, Clapp Park, and the Pittsfield Municipal Airport to provide resources, opportunities and accessibility for recreation and conservation.
