Celebrating Our Incredible Volunteers

On a cool fall evening, BNRC staff, volunteers, family, and community partners gathered to celebrate the people who give their time and energy caring for Berkshire land and trails. Sharing food, laughter, and stories inside a cozy barn on the first crisp night of autumn felt like the perfect reflection of what BNRC volunteers bring to this organization: connection, generosity, and care for the land and each other.
Some of those in attendance have been volunteering with BNRC for more than 30 years (special shout-out to Ginny Akabane!), while others joined just this summer. Whether lifelong Berkshires residents, newcomers, students, or retirees, we share a common thread — a love of the outdoors and a belief that access to nature should be available to all.
BNRC volunteers play many vital roles, including leading hikes, building and maintaining trails, helping with office projects, and monitoring reserves across the county. Their work ensures that trails stay safe, accessible, and welcoming year-round.

This year’s gathering included a look back at the season’s highlights and recognition of some of BNRC’s outstanding volunteers.
New to BNRC
Mike Daly - A dedicated steward of the trails at BNRC’s Steepletop reserve and music enthusiast.
Amy Whitman - A thoughtful and knowledgeable hike leader for BNRC's OLLI hike series. Ask her about old growth forests of New England!
Walter Butzu – An energetic and dedicated trail steward of BNRC’s Stevens Glen reserve, this former teacher does his homework!
Longtime Superstars
John & Kate Kidd – Always ready to lend a hand! Contributing to BNRC in every way possible from coordinating and leading programs to giving the absolute best hugs.
Susan LeBourdais – Wears many volunteer hats with impressive confidence and skill. Don’t get in her way!
David Dutra - A dedicated trail steward, hike leader and supplier of garden plants.
Ginny Akabane – Holds the record for the most decades contributed to support of BNRC, an inspiring example of service and dedication!

As we recognized these outstanding volunteers, reflected on the year’s successes, and enjoyed the friendships forged, one thing was clear: BNRC’s work would not be possible (or nearly as fun!) without the passion, commitment, and community spirit of our volunteers. Thank you, volunteers!
