Launch a canoe to visit this 7-acre island preserve in the northern basin of Hinsdale’s Ashmere Lake.

This land, and all of the present-day Berkshires, are the ancestral homeland of the Mohican people who were forcibly displaced to Wisconsin by European colonization. These lands continue to be of great significance to the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation today. To learn more visit mohican.com.

DIRECTIONS

A public boat launch serving all of the lake is located at Ashmere Lake State Forest at the far south end of the lake (accessed from Hickingbotham Road in Hinsdale).

PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

Paddle, ice skate, snowshoe or ski to this small island in the northern half of Ashmere Lake. If you bring a picnic, make sure to take every crumb home with you to avoid luring hungry wildlife to this isolated habitat.
